Association History

1921 Miss Mabel Stringer while at the Lady Golfers Club 3 Whitehall Court SW1 (LGC) invited friends whom she thought looked over 50 to form the VLGA. "Are you fifty years old?" My first shot made a bull's eye, for it was dear old Sophie Stanley Stubbs; and so she was the very first member of the Veteran Corps. The idea caught on like wildfire, and although that afternoon I nearly forfeited some valued friends, I got over a dozen recruits, and before many days had passed the Veterans' Golf Association was fully equipped with President, Mrs FW Haigh, then close on ninety-two years of age; Vice-President Mrs (Isette) Miller; Captain, Mrs Le Marchant and a committee of old warriors (including myself), with Miss Jean Harwood as Hon. Secretary and Treasurer. There never has been any doubt of our success, and although at first the other associations sent their weakest teams against us, we worsted them all, and they, having learnt their lesson, now send, if not their best, at all events quite good players to tackle the old ladies.'

It was a bit of an anti-climax and I can only suggest, with respect, that if players want a longer days golf they have to do a bit better!

Jamboree quote: "I am grateful to my team for trying so hard. In fact 1 must thank them all for being so tolerant about our hotel. It was quite definitely not the Ritz! Let me give you two examples. Unbeknown to me, Meg Kent's room was a complete disaster, such that Irene made it her first task on waking each morning to see if she needed to extract Meg from underneath her bed which was liable to collapse at any time. However, all was well and 1 am glad to relate that she got a refund on her bill. The food was not hot either, even Jasper, Prue Riddiford's delightful dog, gave up the struggle, as I had done, of getting his teeth into my specially ordered fillet steak.
