Short History of the Senior Women's Golf Association

The VLGA was started in 1921 by Miss Mabel Stringer. Her full name was Mabel Emily Stringer (25 September 1868 – 10 February 1958) was a British golf enthusiast and sporting journalist. She founded a number of golf organisations and served on others.

Her thinking behind its conception was to play golf with and against ladies over 50 years of age and it proved very popular, expanding rapidly throughout the UK. In 1968 the Southern Division of the VLGA was formed. The Midlands, The North and Scotland had by that time all started their own Associations.

Our boundaries stretch from Cornwall to Essex and take in counties to the South. One of the highlights of our year is the Jamboree which is a scratch round-robin event over three days, played in August and hosted by each Association in turn.

Our fixture list includes a Championship, two spring and autumn meetings, a summer meeting, and several fun competitions along with various matches against the Seniors and the Elders.

All levels of ability are included in our fixtures.

Marian Rigby has produced a short history on the VLGA and all documents are available to view on request to the Hon.Sec or Captain.

On 8th December 2023, the VLGA agreed at it's AGM to rename as the Senior Women's Golf Association (South).
